Why do I need to balance my crankshaft?
If you are using performance parts, like a billet connecting rod, aftermarket piston, or a stroker crank, you have changed the weight from the stock specs.
As engine RPM increases, the vibrations from unbalanced parts multiply exponentially. Remember... your full assembly is rotating. Picture yourself spinning in a circle while holding a weight in just one hand. It would be hard to keep yourself centered. If you added an equal weight to your other hand, it would be much easier to stay centered.
That offset weight is what causes excessive engine vibration. A properly balanced rotating assembly means less stress on the engine block, leading to greater long-term reliability.
While balancing does not add horsepower, it unlocks your engine's potential by preventing a loss of horsepower. It eliminates forces that absorb energy, allowing the engine to accelerate faster and rev more freely.
How do we balance the crankshaft?
After inputting the weight of each individual piece of the rotating assembly, our balancer computes a bobweight based off the location and weight of each part. The bobweight acts as the rotating assembly, fastened to the crankshaft rod journal. The balancer then rotates the crankshaft to a specified rpm with the bobweight attached. A reading will let us know exactly where we need to either add or remove weight from the crankshaft counter-weights to be completely in balance. We remove weight by drilling holes or grinding at the surface level. To add weight, a hole can be drilled in the counter-weight, then filled with Mallory (heavy metal/tungsten) and welded in place. This is what gives the crankshaft counter-weights a different look and texture when complete.
How do I ship my crankshaft in to be balanced, and what do I need to include?
First and foremost, we need your crankshaft! We also need to weigh each individual piece of your rotating assembly (connecting rod, bearings (shells), piston, ring set, wrist pin, and clips). You only need to send your rotating assembly to us if you are using parts that we do not sell. Otherwise we can just weigh the same part from our inventory. If your piston is cut, then you would need to send it along with the crankshaft. Please only send parts that are completely unassembled (bearing removed from rod, rings and wrist pin removed from piston, etc.). We do not want to risk damage to your parts, and will not work on assembled parts.
